Tuition rates for non-resident students at California State University-San Marcos did not change during the 2022-23 school year, as revealed in the most recent report, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

California residents paid $7,733 to attend the public university this year, a slight increase of $6 from the $7,727 charged in the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students were charged $19,613 for the 2022-23 school year, which is 153.6% higher than the resident tuition and represents a $6 increase from the $19,607 fee in 2021-22.

Approximately 98% of the undergraduate student body at the university are California residents, while about 1% come from other states and another 1% are international students.

Financial aid data indicates that 79% of full-time undergraduates who began their studies in 2022-23 received some form of student financial assistance. In total, 1,725 students were awarded grants or scholarships amounting to $17.7 million, and 730 students borrowed more than $4.4 million in student loans.

Across the entire undergraduate population, 9,094 students benefited from grants or scholarships totaling $89.9 million. Additionally, 4,119 students took out federal student loans totaling $27.1 million.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
